Our Practice
Some things at Physalia aren’t features. They’re how the work is done.
Made in small runs
Direct pieces are currently made to order in our Vancouver studio. Wholesale is produced in small batches against confirmed orders, in-house in Vancouver or in Mexico, always under our own supervision. When we make pieces ahead, it is always in small runs, never mass production. How We Work explains the details.
Every piece says where it was made
Each Physalia garment has its own record, and that record shows where that piece was made, not where a collection is usually made. See The Digital Passport.
Recorded as it happens
Each piece’s record is written while it is being made, not afterwards: its materials, each stage, the dates and the hands, in the same system for every workshop that makes Physalia. The record keeps its history: if something needs to be corrected, the passport shows the latest information, and the correction stays recorded with its date.
Materials
We work mainly with silk and lace, chosen for how they move, how they wear and how long they last. We use natural fibres wherever we can; when a piece needs something else, its record says so. What each piece is made of is part of its record.
Kept, not replaced
Pieces are built to last, with boning, French seams and internal structure where the design needs them. When a piece changes hands, its record goes with it. Read Made to Order in the Journal.
One price
A Physalia piece costs the same wherever you find it, and it isn’t discounted.
